Digital Forensics & Cyber Investigation

Detailed digital forensics and forensic analysis for lawyers.

Digital forensics is a potent tool in the private investigator’s toolkit that helps to facilitate detailed cyber investigations. Forensics focuses on the collection and analysis of digital information. Digital forensics may include the collection and analysis of data from the following:
  • Computers;
  • Cell phones;
  • Tablets;
  • Small media devices (e.g., USBs);
  • Cameras;
  • External hard drives;
  • Drones;
  • The Internet;
Cyber investigation is multifaceted and requires more than just simple data collection and analysis. Experienced investigators can collect data and analyze the information relative to other areas of a digital device, such as a computer registry and file system. Engaging in this type of detailed and layered analysis can often reveal the “smoking gun” – the precise piece of digital data that can help prove or disprove the existence of a fact. Carden Rose specializes in this type of detailed investigation.

A note of caution to lawyers: do not rely on the “push button forensics or the user data only.” An experienced cyber investigator must do more than simply extract data from a device. He or she must be highly trained in conducting investigations and computer forensics in order to make proper use of the data and metadata and the digital information.

Cyber investigation is a quickly evolving field that must keep pace with technological advances.

Examples of Computer Forensics Work

The private investigation field contains many specialties, including computer forensics. These types of service offerings require individuals with specialized training, experience, and equipment.

On the Private Investigation page, we detail some of our projects related to family law and custody disputes, intellectual property theft, unfair business practices, and criminal defense. Each of those areas require computer forensics.

In addition to those areas, Carden Rose also takes on projects in the following areas:

Due Diligence Investigations for Mergers & Acquisitions
Businesses and individuals who are involved in the purchase of a business often engage in due diligence investigations to ensure they are making an informed decision about the potential business.

Carden Rose performs due diligence investigations for mergers and acquisitions, utilizing its expertise to examine corporate computers, including emails, and other digital data. Due diligence investigations help identify red flags that require further exploration or that may jeopardize a deal.

Due diligence may be required as part of a deal itself, or one party may seek an investigation independently of the deal.

Carden Rose’s experienced computer forensics investigators can help you or your business make an informed decision about a potential purchase.

Hacking & Scams
Hacking cases are on the rise, requiring experienced investigators to provide clients with evidence of intrusion, and specifically, leads and attribution for potential prosecution.

Disgruntled Employees
One common hacking narrative is that of the disgruntled employee who engages in some form of hacking either before or after being fired.

In one case, a disgruntled IT employee at a school district caused an internal network emergency that only he could fix. The plot was designed to frame him as the hero and place him his superior’s good graces. Carden Rose was hired to investigate and identify this scam which lead to locating several facts of digital evidence and when the employee was interviewed by our experienced former law enforcement investigators he gave a full confession.

Banking Scams
  • Victims of online scam.
  • Banking scam with malware.
  • Impersonating bank employees.
Digital forensics and cyber investigation are the backbone of our business. We bring world-class experience and expertise to every project.
